Paula Moynihan

Prof Paula Moynihan, is an Adjunct Professor in Adelaide Dental School, The University of Adelaide Australia where she was formally Director, Food & Health (2019-2024) in the Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences and was the Academic Coordinator for the University’s cross faculty Healthy Societies Research Strategy. She is a Registered Nutritionist (Public Health) and Dietitian (UK). For over 30 years, her research has focused on the interrelationship between nutrition and oral health including the impact of diet and nutrition on dental caries, sugars and health, and the impact of compromised oral health on nutritional wellbeing. She also researches novel approaches to dietary intervention using co-development methods, and mixed methods evaluation. Research projects include the evaluation of Public Health England’s Change4Life Sugar Smart Campaign, and evidence synthesis pertaining to risk factors for Early Childhood Caries – research that informed a 2020 WHO Toolkit on Ending Childhood Caries. She has >150 publications, an H index of 50 and >22,000 citations.   Prior to joining The University of Adelaide, she was Director of the Centre for Oral Health Research at Newcastle University UK where she was Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre Nutrition & Oral Health. She has served in several roles as advisor on nutrition and oral health to the WHO for >20 years. Professor Moynihan was a member of the European Food Standards Agency Working Group on Added Sugars and is currently a member of the UK Governments Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition Subgroup on Maternal and Child Nutrition. In 2024 she received The Nutrition Society Silver Medal for ‘excellent in research by a young scientist’. In 2010 she received an IADR (International Association of Dental Oral and Craniofacial Research) Distinguished Scientist Award for “Geriatric Oral Research”.  She was the 2023 recipient of the American Society for Nutrition Roland L Weinsier Award for Excellence in Medical/Dental Nutrition Education. Prof Moynihan is a past President of the IADR.
