Benoit Varenne

Benoit leads WHO’s work on oral health at WHO HQ level. Benoit’s current focus is on supporting the implementation of policy options in countries to achieve Universal Health Coverage for oral health by 2030 with a particular emphasis on the introduction essential oral health care at primary healthcare level.

Before joining WHO HQ, Geneva, Benoit was the Regional Advisor for Oral Health in the WHO African region and coordinating regional noma programme. In prior years, Benoit worked as a consultant for WHO in the Eastern Mediterranean region and worked closely with numerous NGOs and other international health organizations. He has assisted ministries of health and health care policymakers in several parts of the world with a special focus on low-income settings.

Recently Benoit led the development of the WHO Global oral health status report (November 2022), the global oral health strategy and action plan 2023-2030 following the Resolution on oral health adopted in 2021 by the World Health Assembly.

Benoit graduated in medical dentistry at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, France, and holds a PhD in Public Health and Epidemiology from University of Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris VI). In addition to France, Benoit has studied in community health at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
